The only greek yogurt I have access to within probobly 50 miles is Stoneyfield Farms Oikos Greek Yogurt.  I like it a lot but I was really excited when I got a big package of these little lovelies:

Oh. my. gosh. you guys.  This is THE best greek yogurt EVER.  Go to Chobani’s website and see if they carry it near you.  Unfortunately they don’t carry it anywhere in Utah.  But this stuff is so good.  It is so creamy and has the consistency of custard.  The flavors where amazing.  I tried pomegranate, blueberry, pineapple, vanilla, plain, honey, peach and strawberry.  Holy flavor mania!  Every single one was outstanding!  They aren’t near as tart as most greek yogurts.  They do all have sweeteners (except the plain) but they use either regular sugar or evaporated cane juice.  There’s nothing artifical about these yogurts.  Brandon LOVES this yogurt because it is so creamy.  He got to try to strawberry and blueberry and he’s lobbying for the last pomegranate but I’m on the fence about whether or not I will be sharing that one.  It is just too good and I don’t know when I’ll get more!

So, what’s the big deal about greek yogurt some of you are probobly asking?  Visit this page of their website to read about Greek Yogurt, in general, and Chobani’s process.  It’s very interesting.  Greek yogurt is really high in protein but there are other things about it that are really cool so read that link!

If they sell Chobani at a store near you visit their website for a coupon for a free (no strings attached) container of yogurt!  I promise, you’ll want to try it!

GoWear fit Review

I got to demo THE coolest product a while back.  (Summer and the craziness it brings kept me from writing this review sooner…)  Those of you who watch NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” have no doubt noticed the straps they wear around their arms. Those are called Body Buggs are designed for use with fitness facilities.  The company recently came out with a product for personal use called the GoWear fit and I got to demo it!

Also, you can purchase a display that you either wear as a watch or you hook to your pants like a pedometer:

So, what exactly does the GoWear fit do?  Here is what their website says:

You may be a little bit skeptical as to how this little product does all that it claims to.  It is pretty amazing, really.

Your GoWear fit has multiple sensors. Those innovative sensors take 5 different “views” of your life:

Motion The armband contains an accelerometer, a device that measures motion. (Your car air bag has an accelerometer in it that lets it know when you’ve been in an accident.) We use it to measure HOW you move from multiple axis and perspectives, allowing us to better understand your activity.
Steps We count your steps, using the accelerometer to measure the distinct patterns created by walking and/or running.
Galvanic Skin Response When you sweat, your skin becomes more electrically conductive. This measurement help us see how active you are.
Skin Temperature There’s an electronic thermometer inside your armband that helps us know how hot you are.
Heat Flux When you move, your muscles produce heat. We measure the heat that’s flowing from your body into the environment.

It then takes these readings and figures out your calorie burn.  Pretty cool, huh?  Best of all, it is clinically proven to be accurate within 5-10%!

Here is the review of the full straight week that I wore this:

The actual wear and comfort of the product was great!  It never got itchy or annoying on my arm.  Of course, it didn’t always go with my outfit but you’ve got to expect that.  It will be much more discreet in the winter time. 🙂

Using their software, it told me that I burned an average of 2200 calories a day, which I think is probobly pretty accurate.  This week consisted of regular workouts and living; nothing out of the ordinary.  I have a heart rate moniter that tells me I burn something outlandish like 900 calories in an hour of weight lifting.  I was relieved to see that this product said I burned about 350 calories in a quick paced 3 mile run and about 400 calories in on one of my boot camp classes.  These numbers are more believable to me than the ones spit out by my heart rate moniter…

My average calorie intake for the week was about 1800 calories.  (There is not actual calorie intake logging software with this product.  But you can use any calorie logging software out there and you type in your average daily calorie intake when you set up your registration.  There is also a 3-day nutrition profile that you can really do over and over again if you want.)  This puts me at an average of 400 calorie deficit each day of the week.  Do the math and that means I “saved” 2800 calories over the week which is close to a pound.  My weight went down about .4lbs for the week.  The “math” when it comes to weight loss is definately useful but it doesn’t always tell the whole story so I’m not surprised my weight didn’t excatly fall in line with the “calories saved” number.

Probobly my favorite feature is the sleep duration moniter.  It actually measures the amount of time you are asleep;  not just lying there with your eyes closed.  My goal is always to sleep 8 hours a night.  I wondered if this would show that I wasn’t really sleeping the whole time.  I know this worked because there was one night when I went to bed at 10pm and my alarm went off at 6am (8 hours, right?) but all three of my kids woke up at different times in the night.  In the morning my GoWear fit logged me at 6 1/2 hours of sleep!  Pretty cool, huh?  But I caught up on the weekend (one night was 9 1/2 hours!) and averaged 8:01 for the week.  Way to go me!  I sure do love my sleep and I’m glad I get enough of it!

Another aspect of your life it moniters is your activity and it’s intensity.  For the week I averaged 1 hour 35 min activity a day of which 83 minutes were moderate and 12 minutes were vigorous.  I noticed that my moderate activity time would go up with things like carrying a bunch of groceries into the house or harder household activities.  Weight lifting also fell into the moderate area.  On my cardio days, cardio activities were in the vigorous category. 

It also counts steps (much more accurately than any pedometer I’ve ever used, I might add).  My average was 5200 which I’m pretty proud of considering I didn’t go out of my way to walk a lot or anything.  On my running days my steps were way higher than my weight training days.  But it all averages out.

I love this product.  I think it is a great on going tool for someone trying to lose weight.  It also provides valuable information for someone NOT trying to lose weight.  It is good for everyone to have an idea of their activity levels.

The kind people of Pizzey’s Premium Flax sent me a little care package in the mail!  I was so excited when I got it!  I am all about flax and Omega 3-6-9’s!  They are so important for cardiovascular health, weight maintenance, your immune system, bone health and so many other things.  I was really intrigued by this company’s products because they have the only ingredient on the market that includes all three Omega 3’s (ALA, EPA and DHA).  It has the benefits of fish oil AND flax in one single product!  I’d much rather add flax to my oatmeal and smoothies than take 6 fish oil supplements a day!

Chocolate Omega Bar:  This bar was so good!  It reminded me of a chewy granola bar only much healthier.  The chocolate had little chocolate chips on top and the bar part was really nutty and chewy.  I loved this one!

Cherry Omega Bar:  Once again, this one was amazing.  They really tasted very similar to a yummy chewy granola bar that doesn’t have flax in it.  The dried cherries made this bar really sweet and tasty.

Ultragrad Flaxseed:  This product definitely lives up to it’s claim of not changing the taste or anything about the finished product of your food!  I have been putting it in my oatmeal and smoothies and I can’t taste it at all!  I should clarify, though, that I am used to using flax in my oatmeal and smoothies so I don’t notice a difference with this particular product.  I was worried about the fish oil in it and wondering if you’d be able to taste it.  Who wants fishy oatmeal?!  Ew!  Absolutely no fishy taste at. all.  I love this product.  I don’t feel the need to take fish oil capsules in addition to it either. 

I would recommend any of this company’s products if they are as good as what I have tried!  Once again here is their website.

The wonderful people at Amazing Grass sent me a big ol’ box of samples of all of their different products.  The Amazing Grass products are bars and powdered mixes that are infused with antioxidants, fruits, veggies, and proteins.  They have all sorts of products and I am going to review and talk about each one.

First is the kids line:

This is the chocolate powder.  From the website:

I made it for my chocolate milk loving son and …  to be honest, he hated it.  I just mixed it straight with milk and it was really gritty.  It’s got loads of healthy stuff in it but, unfortunatly, it tasted like it did. 

BUT, I snuck it into a chocolate flavored smoothie and he didn’t notice a thing!  So there’s the trick to fitting some extra veggies into your kid’s diet.  Don’t tell them its there and mix it with a lot of other ingredients!

I LOVED these bars!  The first ingredient is organic dates and you can really taste the sweetness from the dates.  I love dates and I love these bars!  I like the chocolate ones the best.  The center is a kind of a cake like mixture of the fruits and veggies and nuts.  I especially love almond chunks.  These bars would be a great snack if you’re on the run.  I love them!!!

The regular bar seemed like it had a very similar center but it just wasn’t covered in chocolate.  Of course, I liked the chocolate one better. 🙂

The other products are their Superfood Powders.  I liked these mixed into my smoothies/shakes.  You could taste the grittiness but the flavors were good and you are getting TONS of nutrients from each little packet.

    I’ve got another giveaway for you all!  First let me review this awesome product.  The company is YouBar.  On their website you can pick your own ingredients and build your own bars, shakes and trail mixes.  Talk about a good time!  Most of the ingredients are organic and all natural so you don’t have to worry about preservatives and things like that with YouBar.

    For the bars you choose your base out of a variety of nut butters then you can add a protien powder, sweetener, nuts, fruits, chocolates, and lots of other things.

    For the shakes, you choose from protein powders, flavors, fruits, sweeteners and other add in’s.

    Same deal with the trail mix, you choose your own ingredients out of a ton of choices. 

    If you worry about creating your own bar or shake and then not liking it they have a risk-free gaurantee!  If you don’t like it, you just ship back then rest of the box and order a new box for free.  I like this because that would be one of my main hesitations with creating my own product.  What if it turns out nasty?!

    This bar was quite possibly the best bar I’ve ever had.  Seriously.  There was a crunchy rice cereal in it that gave it a crunchiness similar to peanut brittle but not quite as hard.  It was so good and the only ingredients are Cashew Butter, Whey Protein, and Perky’s Nutty Rice Cereal (which has it’s own short list of ingredients that I’m not going to retype).  Talk about a short list, huh?  Pretty awesome.

    A Great Date with Chocolate Bar:

    This bar was awesome also!  It was a lower calorie one (140 cals) so it was a perfect snack.  The ingredients are Organic dates, Whey Protein Isolate, Organic Honey, Cocoa.  You can’t get much more natural than that in a protein bar!  The dates gave it such a yummy sweetness.  I will be buying both of these bars again for sure!

    “The Best Trail Mix”:

    The trail mix was pretty much your typical trail mix.  It had a good blend of different nuts and seeds and some chocolate pieces for the sweetness that I can’t get enough of.

    The shake was pretty good.  It frothed up really well making a good size shake.  I just mixed the powder with milk so I could really taste the flavor.  I really liked it.  I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say it was the best shake I have ever tasted (like I could say about the bars) but it was definatly really good.  This flavor had a mixture of Whey protein, organic cane juice, organic strawberries, organic bananas, and organic vanilla powder.  Definately a lot less processed than most of your protein powders out there. 

    I really enjoyed trying all of these products, but I’d definately have to say that the bars were my absolute fave.  Unfortunately I don’t have any of those to giveaway.  But I do have:

    Today’s recipe is something I had yesterday with some greek yogurt.  I don’t always buy greek yogurt.  I love the thick, custard-like texture but it is three times the price of regular plain yogurt so I consider it a special treat.  For those of you who don’t know, greek yogurt is specially strained to remove the liquid from the yogurt.  This leaves you with a very thick, rich yogurt that is much higher in protein than regular yogurt.  The regular varieties are high in fat so watch for fat free or low fat varieties.  A lot of people love FAGE but they don’t sell that brand anywhere close to where I live.  I buy this Stoneyfield Farms variety.

    I usually get plain but my Walmart was out of plain when I bought it.  It has a very tart taste that is too much for some people.  If you don’t like it, just add in some stevia or Splenda and it tastes much sweeter.  Look at that texture!

    Today, I added some Truvia (stevia) and cinnamon.

    Then I added some chopped up apples and topped with more cinnamon!  It was a fabulous mid morning snack!

    Wow, guys, I ate a lot of food yesterday.  I was really munchy and I’m not sure why.  I’ve heard that if you eat a big breakfast it can help keep your appetite/munchiness in check the rest of the day so I’m going to try it out.  I’m going to really increase the size of my breakfasts (to close to 450 calories) and decrease my dinner size and see how it affects me.  I’ll keep you posted.  🙂

    We have another bbq tonight!  While I love bbq’s this is the third one this week!  I need to control myself tonight with the different salads and treats because I have already splurged enough this week.  Here’s my plan.  I’m going to take a picture of my plate (my ONE plate) that I eat tonight and show it to you all tomorrow!  It will be my “One Plate Challenge”!  I’m skipping the burgers because I can have those anytime.  I am letting myself have 1-2 servings of dessert (or bite of a few) and some yummy salads.  That will be enough that I feel like I’ve indulged but not too much food that I get too full.  Are you all excited?!  Get ready for tomorrow to see the results of my “One Plate Challenge”!

    On another note, do any of you other moms out there have a hard time with munching?  I feel like I’m always walking to the pantry, eating off my kids plates, grabbing a bite of this or that.  It’s really driving me crazy and I need to stop the mindless munching.  My goal for the rest of the week, yes, I know it’s already Wednesday, is to work on the mindless munching.  If I am hungry I will sit down and eat a balanced meal or snack.
